Uncovering Sabah's Hidden Depths
OceanX
Located within the Coral Triangle, Sabah, Malaysia is known for its rich shallow-water ecosystems. But its deeper waters have never been explored. Connections between shallow habitats and deep-sea features like the Sabah Trough could play a critical role in the region's biodiversity. Researchers from Universiti Malaysia Sabah joined OceanX for a first-of-its-kind expedition off Sabah's west coast, using multi-disciplinary science to collect data across depths and establish a baseline understanding of the connectivity between Sabah's diverse marine ecosystems. The expedition's findings will support future research and contribute to Malaysia's efforts to conserve and sustainably manage vital marine resources in Sabah.
