What's Living in the Open Ocean Around Aldabra? | Seychelles BRUVS Expedition
OceanX
The open ocean is the largest habitat on Earth, and one of the least documented. In the Seychelles, where the Exclusive Economic Zone covers roughly the same area as France, most of what scientists know about pelagic species comes from fisheries bycatch and whatever turns up at the market. BRUVS (Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems) offer a different approach. Around Aldabra, one of the most remote and protected island groups on the planet, two teams deployed BRUVS simultaneously. Shallow rigs descended to the reef edge at depths of up to 60 meters for one-hour sessions, recording species that divers cannot reach and staying longer than any dive window allows. Pelagic rigs were strung together in a line of five, each separated by 200 meters, suspended 10 meters down and left to drift wi
