Exploring Roo Rise: Discovering Life in an Unprotected High Seas Biodiversity Hotspot
OceanX
What does it take to protect a place no country owns, but the whole world depends on? Join OceanX and an international team of scientists as they explore Roo Rise, a remote seamount complex in international waters between Australia and Indonesia. This previously unexplored region lies within the high seas, where groundbreaking new opportunities for ocean protection are emerging through the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement. Working alongside the Minderoo Foundation, the OceanOmics Centre at the University of Western Australia, and the Western Australian Museum, researchers are collecting critical biodiversity data from the seafloor to the surface. Using tools including environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling and plankton surveys, the team is documenting life in a region
