Guardians of the Sierra Madre del Sur: Protecting Mexico’s Hidden Biodiversity
Rainforest Trust
Deep in southern Mexico lies the Sierra Madre del Sur, one of the most biodiverse and ecologically important mountain ranges on Earth. From coastal landscapes and tropical forests to rugged mountains, the Mexican state of Guerrero boasts extraordinary geography that creates a refuge for thousands of species, including an incredible diversity of mammals found nowhere else. With support from Rainforest Trust, the Ecology and Biogeography of Conservation Laboratory of the Autonomous University of Guerrero is working alongside local communities to better understand, protect, and celebrate the wildlife that calls this region home. We are also working together to support the creation of Areas Voluntarily Designated for Conservation, which will protect biodiversity alongside community land rights
