The African Savannah's Secret Cleanup Crew | Wildlife Icons
Love Nature
In this episode of Wildlife Icons, we discover how Africa's smallest icons keep its biggest animals going. Elephants digest less than half of what they eat, and a single bull can produce up to 50 tons of dung a year. For dung beetles, that's food, a nursery and something worth fighting for. Almost 16,000 beetles from up to 150 species have been found on a single pile of dung. On the African savannah, dung beetles clear about a ton of dung per hectare every year, and they've been doing this job since the age of the dinosaurs.
